Fixing up URLs for search engine optimization

I use Apache on Linux. I believe it should be possible to eliminate the ".php" text from the URLs on my site, so that instead of /article.php/article-id i'd have a url that was just /article/article-id.

Anyone have any experience with this? I think it would help a lot with search engine optimization. I'm not sure how they're going to treat the .php.

And while we are at it, I would much rather the URL for an article was:

/topic/article-id

So if I had a topic for oranges, and an article in there called tangerines, it would be /oranges/tangerines. This would be great. Any ideas if it is possible?

I have already done the URL rewriting thing to get the ? out of my URLs, and so now I want to take the next step....
