I am new user and stepping through errors as I go. My current error states that I have a SQL error and to check an error.log file. Where would that file be located at? Is it something I have to enable on the server?

I get this error when I run check.php

An SQL error has occured.
Please see error.log for details.

WHERE is this error.log file?

Are there any common SQL errors that occur on new installs? I checked the common installation problems section

/path/to/geeklog/logs/error.log

It's one of those files that you were supposed to make writable druing the installation ...

apparently you can't run check.php without running install.php first? It looks like the check.php is looking for tables.

I did locate the correct log file

It seems you didn't run the install script yet. When you try to call up your site without running the install script first you will of course get SQL errors ...

Or did you get an SQL error while running the install script? If so, what did it say in the error.log, now that you found it?

i highly recommend you run the check.php script before running the install.php script. Errors in the check.php will show up during the install, may as well get them out of the way...that's what check.php is for.

Plan to have lots of problems to correct on your first, second, and maybe third time you install.

Waddya see when you run it?

That won't work. check.php includes lib-common.php, which then tries to establish a connection to the database, creating a session - and failing, because the database hasn't been set up yet.

check.php doesn't need all that, but it needs the config.php and the only way to get the actual path to that file is to include lib-common.php.

Bit of a chicken and egg problem here ... Rolling Eyes

First thanks for all the tips. This is a new process to me and your help has been much appreciated. I have worked through most of the errors and it appears to be working. I am going through the process of trying to determine how much you can customize.

I figured out how to edit the front page 'general news' although I was looking for a webpage to edit. I guess this data is stored in a table and not embedded in the code.

no other install problems at this time.
