Can I track hits within GL on the external links I've embedded in articles? Site stats doesn't show it, unless I'm really blind tonight...

The links are a combination of open-new-browser links ("target=") & also ones that take the browser directly to the linked page.

If not, I guess I'll check the server's web stats & see what it reports.

Thanks for any info!

You won't see outgoing links in your webserver's logs ...

The only thing you could do is add those links to Geeklog's links section and then use the portal.php link in your stories.

bye, Dirk

In addition to Dirk's advice you could install the Vistor Stats plugin and get more detailed (monthly, daily) info about separate hits in your site.

Oh, Dirk, I really like that idea! I'll have some major story updates to do soon!

And thank you, Robin, I'll immediately hunt down that plugin.

Thanks, all!

Hmm...Dirk, or anyone else who knows, as I'm creating a couple GL links on my site for this, I'm realizing when I change the "a href" link in the story, that'll just go to my GL link & the user will need to click again to get to the actual target.

Does anyone know of a way I can code the "a href" in the story to actually get the user to the target of the GL site link?

I may need to discover how to code PHP well enough write a function I call with my story's "a href" link, pass it the actual target, and have the function also record the info I want to track...barf!

Thanks for any info or hints...

Hmm? The links in the Links section all go via portal.php, not links.php.

To pick the most popular link from geeklog.net's link section as an example: Instead of linking to http://professionaldancer.net/, you're linking to http://www.geeklog.net/portal.php/link/20030919165808134

Dirk, this example is perfect, and I'm getting to implementing this today in some stories. However--

Anyone know of a graceful way to get the link id number, particularly a way to highlight-n-copy to clipboard?

I don't see it displayed in either new or modify link functions, the only way I see to get it is to mouseover the link in the links management, then laboriously copy the number from the bottom of firefox's border window where it's displaying the contents of the active link.

Thanks for any hints...still a noob at much of GL...

Right click on the link and select Copy Shortcut
Ctrl+V to Paste in the story

Thank you, Boris, this almost works perfectly...

For instance, I get this:

http://www.southparkcity.com/admin/link.php?mode=edit&lid=20050210064441489

...which isn't invoking the link via the portal.php method, but it's real easy to edit that to this:

http://www.southparkcity.com/portal.php/link/20050210064441489

Thanks, that's much better than me manually entering, which is what I've been doing!

If you just take them from your links section they work fine.

Example: http://www.southparkcity.com/portal.php/link/20030729142910409

From your example you the Edit link, and not the actual link itself.
