Adding Stories To Blocks

I would like to create six different topics, each of which will contain (obviously) serveral stories. I'd then like to have a block for each of these topics, so that the main page will be roughly evenly-divided into six sections, each of which will contain the headlines and first few words of the most recent 5 articles from each topic.

can you make an RSS feed for each topic then use the portal block function to call to them for display on your site?
