I like the clever top tabs used on many sites for navigation, my only serious criticism of geeklog is, it's complicated for non geek types, which is what my users are.
This would have say a page top centerblock with a tab for each various sections and components of the site.
My non geek users could more easily find home, forums, news article categories, photo album, it's a more familiar interface to the "common folk".
Now I could just define an image-map, or even a table with colored cells, in the centerblock, but I'd also like the display to be intuitive as to which section you are currently in. The table is maybe easier because php could detect which "section" we're in and color that one cell differently.
Granted, I'm using Cool Blue, and other themes--like geeklog.net's Professiona-- implementation are cleaner on navigation.
Anyone done this yet? Ideas and discussion appreciated. Tom

I do agree with you on this one.
I use the professional theme. But for the most part I like the navigation tabs of the other themes. I would like to keep the professional theme but change the navigation on the top of the page to somthing A little more user friendly.
My problem is after my last problems I am affraid to try and change things on my own

Menu items are rendered using the menuitem.thtml template files. It should be easy to make those look like tabs (I actually did that in my ClearBlue theme).
And since you can use PHP in there (since they're part of the header), it should even be possible to make them look different depending on where on the site you are (i.e. highlight the current section). A bit tricky, perhaps, but possble ...
bye, Dirk

Thanks, Dirk, I'll take a good look at that theme and the menuitem.thtml file. I'll also eyebal my site for aesthetics to a change of the menu to tabs. And I like the "clean" appearance of your tabs.
I also may give a stab at developing a centerblocks php routine based on it, because I would prefer the tabs to be the 2nd centerblock on the index page and the 1st on the other pages...
I've developed a graphic for the 1st centerblock on the site, to "expand" the page header...my audience was intimidated by the technical appearance without that...
