Story Editing

I'm afraid I am not a very good editor because I find myself having to go back and repeatedly correct things in posted stories. When I go to re-edit a story I find that I have to restate spaces ( ) otherwise when I save and review my edits, the spaces are gone.
Am I doing something wrong or is there some systemic correction that can be made?
