safe lib-common.php hacks with upgrades?

Hello! First I wanted to say I love geeklog. I went through about 10+ cms to find the right one and this is very ez to use and the code is wonderful!

I notice a few things in lib-common.php that I would like to change around a bit. I know I can go in there and hack around at it, but if theres a good practice to safely change items in there and not having to worry about upgrades messing things up or changing it.

An example of a I hack that I just started with the whos online. I changed it so it shows the users photo insted of the camera.
