Setting comments defaults?

When I redesigned the new template I'm using, I prefered that the comments at the end of articles only displayed in the flat style. So I removed the drop down boxes for changing it, and added these hidden inputs:
<input type="hidden" name="mode" value="flat">
I am tracking the popularity and seoptimization of a recent article, and in looking at google's cache of it I just realized that my hack didn't work. By default new users and google see the comments in a threaded format.
So how do I make the comments layout permanently flat?
