I am switching from my current webhosts using 1.3.9 and am using this chance to install 1.3.11 on my new webhost.

I haven't been able to transfer my database from 1.3.9 to 1.3.11 without problems.

Is this not possible or do I need to take some extra steps?

Of course it's possible. Did you do the database upgrade (using the install script in upgrade mode)? What exactly is your problem?

bye, Dirk

I need to correct my original post.... I am upgrading from 1.3.8sr2 to 1.3.11.

Dirk-- I have done a fresh install(1.3.11) on the new server as my earlier install(1.3.8sr2) of Geeklog is on a completely different server. So, I am trying to move the database over after the fact. In other words, I want to move database from 1.3.8.sr2 on server #1 to a newly(and already) installed 1.3.11 on server #2.

Is this possible?...or do I need to move my database over to new server first, then install 1.3.11 as an upgrade?

Hack means 1.3.8 sr3 when he says 1.3.8sr2. ...it's monday, and he hasn't had his fix yet. Very Happy

Since the database structures have changed between those two versions, you really need to run the upgrade script.

I would recommend first moving your entire geeklog install and database to the new system. Then, once it is all up and running like it was before, upgrade it using the normal upgrade path.

Gotcha....

Is it as simple as just "moving" the files from one server to another?
I realize that I would need to alter paths and such, but beyond that I would just need to move the files and database over? At that point I would just run the 1.3.11 install and opt for upgrade?

You guys have been great help so far. Quick responses. Thanks.
I read the referenced article and want to make sure I understood it.

Let me see if I have this straight:
---
1- Install version 1.3.11 on new server
**((Or, do I install 1.3.9sr3 first then upgrade to 1.3.11?))**
---
2- Drop the 1.3.11 database
---
3- Create an new/empty database on 1.3.11 server
---
4- Import database from the old 1.3.9sr3 server
**((Should website be functional at this point? I cannot login with existing accounts...))**
---
5- Upload any plugins (besides Static Pages) on 1.3.11 server
**((Just upload their files. DO NOT run install scripts))**
---
6- Upload story images and user photos to 1.3.11 server
---
7- Don't upload theme from 1.3.9sr3 yet. Use default theme for now.
---
8- Run 1.3.11 install script now and choose Upgrade Mode
---
9- Check plugins. If necessary run their install scripts now.
---
10- Update theme

Install the files for 1.3.11 on the new site. Import the old database instead of creating a new one. The site will not be functional until you run the install script in upgrade mode over the old database.

bye, Dirk

We followed the steps and it appears that all is well with our install of 1.3.11 (including the transfer of tables from 1.3.9sr3 from old server). Appreciate the help you guys provided today. We have been using GL for a couple of years now so feel we know it but this was the first time we were attempting a cross-server upgrade.

You guys were great! Big Celebration
