Unpack the tarball *within* your (my) web tree

I recently switched to using Linux as an OS, so I'm a tad on the green side.

So I uploaded it to my root path of my web site. SSHed in and ran

Text Formatted Code
tar -zxvf geeklog-1.3.11.tar.gz

All that did is give me a directory named geeklog-1.3.11 with all the good stuff in there. I'm pretty sure new folders should be made in my root directory and the public_html stuff should go where it should go.

I know I could unzip it locally and upload it like I'd do in Windows. But I want to do it the Geek way!

Thanks

...and the problem is what?

the install instructions don't stop at "unpack the tarball." They continue explaining that you should move a couple of directories now that they are unpacked, etc...

You can do all the work from your ssh command line. You might want to become familar with the command line editors that your host offers (usually including a subset of vi, vim, emacs, nano, pico). To be a true Geek, you must learn either vi/vim or emacs really well and then start flame wars about which one is better. Smile
