Own password for GL 1.3.11

Hello Everyone,
I have to make a customised sign-up page for my site. I have figured that out. thanks to the Forum. But now I dont know how should I have a user select his own password while registering and disable the function where it generates a random password and emails it. I saw through the forum but the modification suggested is for GL 1.3.7.
please do suggest.
