Problems logging in to Geeklog

sad
I know this has been done 50 million times in this forum.
I've read so many posts about not being able to sign in to geeklog, it's not even funny.
I've tried implementing these post suggestions to the best of my ability (and I'm not THAT much of a noob), and I'm racking my brain.
Could SOMEONE point me in the right direction? In ENGLISH!!!!!!!

Everything is great until I use either Yahoo! or GoDaddy's domain masking. I can't sign in to Geeklog then. Wait, that's not true. What happens is "who's online" shows me as logged on, but it also shows me as guest. I can't see the Admin block at all. I also have the chatterblock plugin, but I have it so that only registered users can use it. All I can see is the message: "Registered users only" or something like that.

I've tried:

  • changing the cookie domain path in config.php (I don't really understand that anyway. I'm not sure what exactly I'm supposed to type there. The example is a little shady to me...)

  • Unmasking the domain forward at both Yahoo! and GoDaddy (they are NOT pointed at the same area at the same time). It worked. I can access everything again. The problem with this is, I can't see my domain name in the address bar. (Neither can anyone else...)

  • I've even made a redirecting splash page with javascript that counts down to going to the geeklog area. The only way it would work was if the redirection opened geeklog in another window. Of course, this window would be free of my domain name.

  • I run IE6 most of the time. Until this incident, everything with Geeklog and it's most of its plugins have run smoothly.

Ok. That's my predicament. Like they say here:
    Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem. Except that with my geeklog, new users can't sign in even with my page unmasked. I can get in as admin. I even signed in myself in as a new regular user. I don't understand what the problem is. I AM a noob. I could use help with this too.

I hear you. I just want them to put this in english, not "techie". Hell, if someone could "step-by-step" this, it would be great.
I really love this program and it's modules. I just don't want to have to see the GEEKLOG website every five minutes. Unfortunately, I've been on the main geeklog site more than I've been on my own...

To put it bluntly: Avoid "masking", get proper hosting, and everything will work.

The login relies on cookies. Browsers will only accept cookies from the proper domain, for security reasons. Trying to work around that will either not work at all or result in something that's insecure. - neither of which is desirable.

Thanks for being blunt, Dirk. You do that soooo well.
I was just recently informed that if you park your domain name at your host server, things should be fine like Dirk says.

    For example:
You get a site at www.xyz.com (your site is www.xyz.com/~cookie)

You get your domain name from somewhere like GoDaddy.com, Yahoo.com, or Register.com, (you buy www.cookiemonster.com)

Park your domain name with www.xyz.com. (You bought the name. For at least a year you own the rights to that name.) Simply move the name (www.cookiemonster.com) from Yahoo or Register or GoDaddy to your hosting service at www.xyz.com.
Of course you may need to contact your customer support (at both www.xyz.com and GoDaddy, Yahoo, Register) for help with this, but most places (I believe) will do this for free.

According to three completely different sources, this should clear up some problems associated with masked domain forwards from a domain name provider and not being able to log into Geeklog. Geeklog's cookie system should work just fine then.

(I have NOT tried this myself yet. Hopefully, it will work.) praying it will work
