Story Management - Language issue

Since we are at the brink of a new version, I wonder if anyone would agree that we should replace the term "Story Management" with a more userfriendly one, as it is currently a little confusing for the users. Some of my users thought enabling the "Story Management" meant activating the story itself. (I also had no idea what it was when I was translating it. When I saw where it was used, it was a totally different from what I have imagined, and my translation didn't make sense at all.)

Should we rename it "Story Expiration" so that the option "Enabled" will make more sense, or if you have a better suggestion?

I named it Story Management since it allows you to
1) Delete it in a future Date
2) Archive it in a future Date

It's just a heading - as the real purpose should be more obvious when in the story editor.

I would not expect someone to understand the complete function and use of all $_CONF settings in config.php by just reading the variable.

Then again - one of the beauties of the language files is you can call it whatever you want - as short or as long as you desire.

I think Sam has a point there. You're not managing the entire story there, just what happens to it after a certain amount of time.

"Expiration" is closer to what it really does, but not quite. Any other ideas, anyone?

I didn't think it was a problem until a couple of users messed it up. Even though it is an easy fix on the language file, I felt the change could improve GL's usability. Very Happy

On the sites that the story admin is only one person, or only the geeks, this wouldn't be an issue. Based on the fact that we haven't yet got many responses, this might be the case.

On a more general note, I think that the language files could do with a bit of a general overhaul. Another pet hate of mine is "Web Resources". Not sure how many people use that term to describe a link...

Also, a good translation coordinator is needed, I reckon, managing a team of translators who who could then work on not just the main language files but also the plugins. But it would take a fair-sized community to make it work well. I imagine Dirk is doing this as well as development on the 1.3 branch? I know that ubuntu linux had a Rosetta project, where anyone could contribute online by translating a few lines when they had time (obviously there is an editor checking and finalising). Something like that would be very efficient I think.

Cheers,

Euan.

I like the idea. If there isn't someone that has more time and qualification, I would like to chip in as the coordinator. I have been a member of STC for years where I learned a great deal about web "usability." Technical communication is a bridge between technology and lay users.

I feel, one of the reason GL is popular only among geeks is because it lacks usability for lay people, or user-friendliness, in spite of the fact that it is a high quality program. Programmers are usually not good technical writers because they tend to think several steps ahead and presume users to have similar technical mindset.

I don't know about Rosetta project, but I can look into it. However, I have yet no idea how to check the languages that I don't know. I know two usable languages--English and Chinese (both Traditional and Simplified). I also know Burmese, but it is currenlty not so useful because its utf-8 fonts are still being developed.

As for availablity, I just started my doctoral courses and am virtually burrying my head in books for at least the next three years. But, I LOVE geeklog and I want to contribute my best effort.

If you guys think Euan's proposal make sense, I would like to be a humble cadidate.

We have a (very quiet) geeklog-translations mailing list (yes, I know, the archives don't work ...) where I usually give advance warnings of upcoming releases and changes in the language files.

That's about all I can do - the rest depends on the contributors of the language files. We have some long-time contributors for a few of the language files, while others haven't been updated in a while.

So there is no real "coordinator" for the language files now. But it would sure help to set up such a position. Feel free to start posting about this on the mailing list.

FYI: Geeklog 1.3.12 will require quite a bit of work on the language files, as the links and polls sections have been broken out into plugins now. What we have in CVS currently is in a terrible state, though, so I haven't posted about this yet.

bye, Dirk

OK, let's move this to the translation mailing list.

Cheers,

Euan.
