I notice that if a category doesn't have a file in it, that category does not appear (outside of the admin screens). I can understand that. However, this happens even if the category contains populated subcategories. This means that every category I create for the purpose of housing subcategories must contain at least one file or the category and subcategories will not be visisble. Does anyone know a workaround that doesn't require having to create a token/bogus file?

Is there any way for a category to list the total number of files (including those in subcategories)? When I create a category to house subcategories(and place the token file in it so it will be visible) it only shows the file count at 1 (for the token file) even though there may be dozens of files located in the subcategories.
