In the next week or so I'd like to move my site from one host to another. After I've figured out how, there will be a couple more being moved as well, so I want to make sure that I know what I'm doing ahead of time...

I've read this, but have a couple of "Can I" questions...

Obviouslly I'll do the database backup at the old host.

when it comes to copying the files at the old host though.....

couldn't I back up my entire public_html folder from my old host and then upload it to the new host? I've got so may things that I've messed with and tweaked, plugins that have been modifed this way and that, Gallery integrations, phpbb integrations, etc... that the thought of going through and reinstalling all of those is just mindnumbing....

I know there are other questions I should be asking but don't know what they are.

yes you can simply copy you public_html over.
Just need to ensure that your path definitions reflect the new server file system.
A couple of paths become hardcoded in the filemanagement plugin, so that may not work proper after your move. that's the only issue that i had last host i changed.
