Images instead of text in Block Header?

Is there a simple way to put images for your individual block headers or does this require some major hacking?

Wouldn't that make every block have the same image? I want say Sections to have its own image, and Resources to have its own image.
If I change it just in the template they'll have the same heading.

Yes it would.

In this case you need to create your own blocks (Normal Block) and you will be able to set any backround image you want. I.e. different images for separate blocks.
