Has the ability for easyfile to replace files ever found it's way into a version of the plugin that got distributed? Is this plugin still being worked on?

Hi Rob. No, the functionality for replacing files is not yet complete, and no, the plugin is not abandoned.

v0.7.6 covered the basic needs I had for the plugin, so I wasn't highly motivated to start implementing new features (also, I've been insanely busy the past few months).

But anyway, here's the good news: I expect to have a v0.8 release candidate out by next week. Among bug-fixes and small feature additions, v0.8 will include support for file-replace as well as screenshots.
