RSS vs XML extension usage

If you put a link for your RSS on your website by using geeklog.xml, the rss feed would display xml codes. If you use .rdf or rss, you will be prompted to download.
I wonder what the difference, benefit, etc. would be of using different extensions. I saw that Dirk has changed the geeklog.rdf to geeklog. rss. Why and why not xml? What's the benefit for the reader?
I am sure others geeklogers will like to know about this too.

Actually, the extension shouldn't matter as long as the webserver sends the correct content type with the file. For an RSS feed, that would be
I only changed the .rdf to .rss since I remember the feed validator being extra picky about that at one point (and because RSS is more widely known these days).
