Different dates on main page and in stories

I've searched the forums, but there is a million and half pages (slighly exaggerating) with the word date in them.
What I'm attempting to do is show users this style of date (25/11) on the main page, and then in the full story this style of date November 25th, 2005.

You have to change article.php and the template files in order to do that.
Its easy, but when the new version comes out, you will have to do it again...

I've tried making the changes in article.php and it didn't work. Of course, I'm not expert programmer when it comes to PHP.
What would I need to add? I'd have not probs adding with the new version comes out with it's full release. I'll multiple other hacks to take care of anyway.
