Error after server crash recovery - can't post, can't edit

OK. My RAID, keeper of all data secure, blew 2 out of the three drives in its array, and could not recover. Why me?

Anyway, I managed to get the filesystem coughing and sputtering up on an IDE drive, updated the OS (Mandriva Linux 2006), and was even able to reconnect the Mysql databases to the multiple Geeklog sites I run on the server. There, the trip to Happy Land takes a sharp turn south.

Not entirely sure what's changed - could be the permission requirements under the new Apache server, mayhaps something with the Mysql server that changed in the update. Here's where I'm at:

I can log in as admin, and happily scurry around the menus. When I try to create a new story, I can preview my work, but as soon as I try to publich, I get the dreaded and much-discussed "You don't have access to the story admin..." error.

But wait! There's more! If I attempt to edit an existing story, the editor window comes up, but all of the text boxes are empty.

I've pored over this Forum (except ones with such informative subjects as "reply" or "Throw me a bone"... Banging your head ) looking for a hint, but haven't found one that quite describes this situation.

Before I try to reinstall and import (which scares the hell out of me - am I backing up the problem? Next most recent backup is months old - yeah, yeah. I've been busy...) the old data, do any of you Geeklog Geniuses have any insites for me (aside from advice regarding my obvious problem with backups, that is. The logs in that particular water have already knock the bridge down...)

Any/all help appreciated. If I can fix this, I PROMISE praying it will work to back up my data more regularly. Yes, I promise... Can someone help me

Follow-up: new users can make accounts, so it's not a (or probably not...) a Mysql thing.

Yet another follow-up: ~/admin/install/check.php reports all is well. I'm REALLY ornfused now. Apparently, by the dearth of responses here, so are all the rest of you. Mr. Green

It may be a subtle damage to the tables that hold the permissions - hard to tell without spending some time over a database dump ...

If new user signups are working fine, you could register as a new user with your site and then upgrade that account to a Root user manually.

bye, Dirk

Well, for some odd reason and out of the blue, the Angel of the Lord descended into my Geeklog instantiation and flopped out an error message regarding register_globals in the php.ini. (Sounds a lot better than I must have missed the message each time I tested the board, but I'd swear that there was no message there before. Honest. It's a miracle...)

Seems that the new Mandriva install lies. Though it explicitly says in the ini file comments that the register_globals flag, as evil as it is, is set to "on" to ensure backward compatability with all the scripts that use it, reviewing the actual settings showed it to be off.

Set it to "on", and all is well.

Now, on to figuring out what insidious new server setting is interfering with Calendarscript...
