Ok. This is how I install my plugins. I download the tarball, unzip em on my local comp, and using FTP explorer I drag and drop the folder onto my server, then follow instructions on readme. i noticed that my hosting has provided me with Cpanel for my site management but I never use it. on all readmes I have noticed that unzipping is usually done on site using a command prompt. How do I do this?
Also I dont understand how to restore backups. I regularly create GL onsite backups but what if something happens and I need to restore it. How do i do this?
thanks

If you have cpanel you probably don`t have shell access. So DON`t unzip on the server you may not be able to FTP that stuff anymore and get stuck. Use FTP only.
Use cpanel to back up the MySQL. look for MySQL and try to backup there. Probably you will also notice something to help you restore (any button or instruction).
