Plugin Installation Procedures

You guys really need to improve your installation procedures for plugins. GL makes installing applications on Linux look easy.

Why dont you create a system where the plugins only have to reside in one directory inside of PLUGINS, instead of being spread around everything like in the ADMIN dir and PUBLIC_HTML etc.

I'm sure their is strong reasoning behind your decisions but surely something better must be possible.

I have to agree with this because installing what should be a simple plugin like a forum or menu should be a very quick and painless task. After following the instructions for the forum and gl menu installation, neither of the programs work correctly, can't even get it to appear in the plugin installion in the admin panel. It's like pulling a tooth while eating popcorn and taffy.

Has anyone considered creating a video for plugin gl and installations? Everything is written for the experienced user and not the beginner.

Great program and plugins but can spread the word with such installation problems.

No worries, things will get better in the next major release (1.6), thanks to the power of the Summer of Code.

Dirk or another knowledgeable person,

In the meantime, are there any instructions to match the newer version of Geeklog? I have also noticed that the current plugin instructions does not match. I see where the program setup is much easier. Thank goodness but installation is still a problem for me personally. Gotta get this thing down soon.

I'm interested in the newer forum installation instructions.

Thanks for any advice.

Not sure what you mean - plugin installation hasn't changed at all.

Did you see the "sticky" How to install plugins topic in this forum?

Yep, I did see it. this is the problem I am having with the Captcha and Forum Plugin.

My hosting account has multiple domain names added to it. The main domain which is a Geeklog site is the top level domain in the public_html. My hosting allows me to host multiple domain names on the hosting account. The additional domains are not sub domains and are also Geeklog sites. They are listed as add-on domains, not parked domains.

Now I'm probably not explaining this correctly but as a non-programmer, I will do the best that I can. The add-on domains are also Geeklog sites. I am trying to setup the forum, Captcha, and several other plug ins on the add-on domains but based on the installation instructions, I cannot install the add-ons correctly or maybe I need to use another method, I don't know. The plugins were added fine on the main domain through luck but I cannot get it to work correctly for the add-on domains. See below.

Public_html folder
----Main domain name (Geeklog site)
--------domain2.com (add-on domain)
--------domain3.com (add-on domain)
--------domain4.com (add-on domain)

I want to install the plugin on the add-on domains.

This probably doesn't make sense to you but I am sure there has to be a way to get it to work. Once again, I am not a programmer and every thing I have done has been html only. The individual that initially setup the site is now MIA. The main site is an older version 1.4 (??) that needs to be update with a custom registration. Two of the others are also version 1.4 (??)versions. I don't want to update it an loose everything including the custom template. the 4th domain is a 1.5. recent Geeklog version.

Thanks.

your add on domain are difference from my. I can host unlimited domain on my host account too. it look like this:

inside the public_html or www directory :
---1. main domain.
---2. 2nd domain.
---3. 3th domain.

install gl plug in just like the main one nothing difference.

You can basically split Geeklog into 2 parts: The (contents of) public_html and all the rest. You can then place these two parts anywhere on the server - you only need to make sure that $_CONF['path_html'] and $_CONF['path'] are set correctly, i.e. $_CONF['path_html'] points to where you put the contents of public_html and $_CONF['path'] points to where you put the rest.

That allows you to put as many Geeklog sites on one server as you like and anywhere you like.

I'm new to this.

Does this mean I need to start with Step 2 and/or add the files to the add-on domains only since the top level already has the main files?

You should have a complete set of all the files for each domain, i.e. multiple copies of all the files.

There's a hack to run more than one site off of one copy of the files but I wouldn't recommend that if you're still new to Geeklog - it would only add to the confusion.

bye, Dirk
