I would like to put a login & register link on the top left hand side, I have removed calendar web resources, polls etc, I would like to move things like Plugin links to the left side, any idea's ?

Find header.thtml under your layout dir.
Find {plg_menu_elements} and move it to the desired location.
login and register links you'll need to add using plain HTML.

Can I move that to another document, block or what ever ?
I have version 1.3 but am upgrading at present tere is no {plg_menu_elements}
in that file there is {menu_elements} & also {plg_headercode}

How do I change the menu?

And, no, those only work in header.thtml
