I'm reading everywhere that in 1.4.0 themes can change the img_type variable. but in which file??? how?

i've spent like 3 hours looking in the 'professional' theme files for an example, but am failing to find it! help!

For other people who dont know... img_type global setting is found in

lib-common.php

at the text
if( empty( $_IMAGE_TYPE ))
{
$_IMAGE_TYPE = 'gif';
}
