That's what I want to know as well.
I want to have MediaGallery's random picture block placed in the header, and I thought the best way to do it would be to set it as a right block, disable all the other right blocks, and place the right_blocks call where I want the image in the header. But it doesn't work.
Can anyone tell me what I have to change (and where) to make this work?
Thanks!
I have no idea what I'm doing.

There is a file functions.php included in every theme. You can override the COM_siteHeader() and footer functions in lib-common.php by including similar functions in functions.php - naming is explained in the file. I can imagine that you should be able to use a custom header function there to execute php code - for example, calling the MediaGallery block.
