I'm running a fairly succesful site: (http://southeastmx.com) and I am still using the orginal install that Fantastico created for me which is 1.3.11sr1.
I really want to update the system but I'm REALLY paranoid that I'll screw something up and loose the site. The site has barely gotten it's legs underneath it so if it went down it would really screw me up.
Just how hard is it to upgrade? Is it very risky? Also for some reason, the database backup feature included in GL has never worked for me so I'm not really clear on how to make a restorable backup of the site as it is.
I welcome your advice.

To be blunt: At the moment, your biggest risk is to get hacked if you don't upgrade to 1.3.11sr5 ASAP. Grab the combo update and upload the new files - no database or theme changes required (fixing the path to config.php in lib-common.php first, of course).
Before you upgrade to 1.4.0, you should really get the database backup working or find some other way to make a backup of your database. That would also enable you to set up a test site locally or under another URL and try things out there.
bye, Dirk
