I'm new to geeklog and have been playing around with it but I cant seem to get a new user to be able to write a story that is just approved instead of waiting for approval, is this possible?

There's an option in config.php ($_CONF['storysubmission']) to disable the story submission queue (entirely, for all users). Or you can create a group that has the story.submit feature and make all the users you would like to be able to publish without the submission queue members of that group.
