Hi,
We've been using geeklog to run libcom.org/news for the past few months, and were using the myheadlines plugin to scrape headlines from geeklog searches in order to make rss feeds for different users or search terms.
The idea was to have something similar to the automatically generated rss feeds from google news.
However, when we upgraded geeklog, our search page's html changed slightly, and the myheadlines scraper stopped working. Rather than fix this every time we upgrade, we thought about trying to develop rss feeds for search terms from within geeklog rather than using an external scraper. Unfortunately none of us have the php or specific geeklog knowledge to do this, and have not been able to find a module which does it. Hence this post:
This is what we think needs to be done:
Generating rss feeds from geeklog search terms:
#Make a copy of the geeklog advanced search page.
#Make this call a results page which is just a stripped down php page with the latest 5 or 10 linked headlines on it.
#Once we've got the headlines in a standalone php page, it should be a relatively easy step to then take those 5-10 headlines and put them into a properly formatted XML/RDF file.
#If we can do that, we could then re-integrate it back into the main geeklog search, and then any search term could have an RSS feed linked from it which people could use to make their own ones. We'd then not be reliant on myheadlines at all - it'd all be done through geeklog.
If anyone's also interested in this or would like to develop something that could do it, that'd be great. I think it's something which would be a good addition to the geeklog software overall and would be happy to put a feature request in if that's appropriate.
