I'm trying to make my first theme, and i have the header and footer.thtml working fine. But the biggest part i'm having trouble with on the homepage is manipulating the "latest forum posts" and "News" area. I looked again and again in the admin area and can't find anything to control them. I just want to find the template that controls the forum table so i can make it narrower, and i want to remove the "News" area since there is no news to show. any help would be greatly appreciated!

The part in the middle, i.e. where the stories are listed, is not controlled by a template file - it's just sandwiched between header.thtml and footer.thtml. If you're talking about the "No news to display message", search the forums for the message for hacks to get rid of it.

The forum posts block is controlled by templates in the forum's template directory somewhere. Keep searching ...
