i'd like to learn to setup and admin a geeklog site. it would be great if someone could tell me what skills i need before i jump in. i have a good understanding of computers and some programming skills, but none in linux, php or mysql. how much do i need to know before i begin and what are some good resources to help.

I think the pre-installation checklist sums it up quite nicely.
You don't need to know PHP. Although having a rough idea helps, as you have to enter some information in two PHP files and if you know that text strings should be enclosed in quotes and lines should end with semicolons, then that helps in locating typos and such.
