CHMOD 777

It suggests in the check script that if 775 isn't working, then try 777. Isn't this a bit of a security issue? Am I giving the world permission to write whatever files they want to my site?
Also, it could be an issue with the file access my host has set up? What can I suggest they change do fix this? If my home folder is given to nobody will this fix the problem?

Yes, it is. That's why we suggest you only use it if nothing else works.
However, it's not an immediate threat in itself. You still need a way to upload something to that world-writable directory in the first place.

Yes, try talking to your hosting service. If the files and directories are owned by the webserver (or user the webserver is running as, e.g. "nobody"), then 775 or even 755 should work.
