Adding a section on top of the stories to use for advertising?

I would like to add a section that will show in the center section before the stories that can contain a few rows of small ads. Has any one seen anything like this? Or has anyone any ideas as to adding advertising to a site. It’s been a few years now and I would like to start generating some income from the site.
