syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in..?

I recently updated my template profile.thtml in /preferences so my theme would work with GL's latest version. I add the old/new confirmation password fields.
It worked great, but now upon changing a password a user gets this:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in /'myserver'/plugins/spamx/Ban.Action.class.php on line 40
I haven't touched this or any other spamx file.. in fact I haven't even edited any PHP, just the template! Oddly the password change works despite this error.
Checking the class file, there has been no change. Any ideas?
