Has anyone come up with a way to set up topics in a tree stucture? Is there a plugin for this or some other way to set this up?

Unfortunately it does not seem to work for the GL 1.4.* versions.

Yes that is a pretty good block menu which serves my purposes. Any idea if it will soon be working with 1.4.x?

Are there any other plugins ro solutions out there that can do this?

Nobody replies to the old thread so I suppose nobody pays attention to it.

Best to look for any normal JavaScript menu and fix it manually:

you can run javascript within the php block? Are there examples of that somewhere?

Yes, no problem in the blocks. Try www.kulturkochpott.de and whatch the "Über uns" fly in from the left, then click it. It is http://sourceforge.net/projects/js-menu

Ok so it looks like the only problem would be hooking in the menu items so that the info is pulled directly from the database. Of course you could hard code them if you did not anticipate any changes. Perhaps that would be easier to start with.

I did hard code. An alternative is to look into the blockmenu or Blaine`s menu:
