PHPBB Bridge - GL & PHPBB profiles

I have posted on this site before regarding this issue. I have been studying some PHP since then and would like to make some changes to my site and was hoping for some direction.
Where username shows within phpbb forum and groups, I would like the GL fullname to display. I tried a mod that was suggested on Turias' site but it did not work with my version of PHPBB. I would like to undertake the modifacations myself asa learning experience but am not sure where to begin.
I also want to place a link in my GL profile to the PHPBB forum profile, and or call up the forum photo. I believe that these are two different databases. Is this at all possible to access info from the PHBB userphoto table and have it display or link from within the GL profile? If so, where would I begin?
