I'm wondering it it is possible to arrange the frontpage to display only the single latest news post, yet show a different number when specifically viewing the news posts.
As it stands by setting "news items" to 1 by default the latest news post is shown on the frontpage, but this also means when viewing the topic news the entire page contains just one post, with loads on pages.
Is it possible change this to something like 10 posts per page when viewing the news topic?

You can change the number of stories per page for topics in the topic's settings. If it isn't set, it uses the default (i.e. the value from config.php).
