I've been meaning to create a website for years but since I discovered Geeklog I'm going to go ahead and do it. So I've got a few questions I was hoping could be answered here.

Will IX Webhosting (The Business plan) suffice?

Thay have an option of Windows and Linux (cheaper) hosting. I run XP here and I don't have any experience with Linux but I hear it's more stable... Can/should I go for Linux hosting? Will it make any real difference to the installation/editing of Geeklog?

As you might have noticed I'm not a geek (more like a mini-geek-with-training-wheels) and although I'm the computer-go-to-girl for my friends I have little experience with websites, ftp etc.

I saw that I can pay Dirk etc to do a basic setup for me, which I'm considering...but I think I'd like to give it a go myself, I'm a quick study and find it's the best way to learn Smile

Check these guys out for hosting - https://www.opensourcehost.com
They are all about open source software (the name gives it away a little)
Good prices for their various packages, excellent support and they'll install Geeklog (as well as any OS software) for you.

Enjoy

Yes, I think the business plan or the one lower will work as well as most webhosts today, they all pretty much offer the basics you need to run Geeklog or any blog system. When they say Windows and Linux, they mean the server operating systems, it does not have anything to do with your local computer whether Windows XP or Mac.

I think the great majority of people use Linux hosting. As for setup, I would go ahead and try it yourself, then, you'll be able to configure it yourself and it's not difficult to do once you've done it.

I'm not an expert by any means so maybe Dirk or someone can affirm the above.

Hope this helps,

knotty

Linux is the "normal" way to chose. Opensourcehost is good and does not blind as much as others do. Just compare the webspace: Opensourcehost gives 75 MB and ixwebhosting gives 300 GB = 300 000 MB. Who do you think is more reliable? Well, it`s a bit vage but I also got 1 account with Opensourcehost. It can`t be so wrong

A normal Geeklog installation does not take more than 30 MB including several plugins.
