Hello,
Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if I found a bug, but

$_CONF['show_topic_icon'] = 0; // default for new stories

doesn't seem to work in config.php.

I assume the possible values are 1 and 0? I'm using theme Classic, but I've also tried it with professional. Note the line above it works,

$_CONF['article_image_align'] = 'left'; // Topic icon on left or right.

Works for me ...

What do you expect it to do? What happens?

I thought it would turn off the icons for the topic that appear embedded in the story text. No? I was thinking it controlled {story_anchortag_and_image}.

It affects only the new articles.

Other than editing the theme file then, is there a way to turn off icons for all stories (like above)?

You even quoted the comment that says that it's for new stories only ...
If you don't want topic icons at all, I'd suggest you remove the {story_anchortag_and_image} variable from the story templates of your theme.

UPDATE gl_stories SET show_topic_icon = 0;

That would take of all existing stories.
