All permissions now set on 777 all even though test says differently,
Results: 7 of 7 tests performed: 0 successful, 7 failed.
Test failed!

Have rechecked and rechecked but still can't write new story.
Still: /public_html/images/articles exists but is not writable
Any help would be appreciated

Used smartftb for most upload and preferences work but also servers cpanel.
was the install tester that showed 775 not 777. but checked files and they show 777.

I had the same problem. It was gFTP not correctly changing the permissions. I SSH'd in and set chmod 777 articles and it worked fine. I was curious if 775 would work but it did not.
