Is anyone out there running the geeklog forum plugin outside of the default folder?
I have my geeklog installed in a /news directory. Now, I'm adding the forum plugin and I don't want it to be in /news/forum. Just /forum. I contacted Blaine (the author of the script) but it looks like it would cost me a couple of hundred dollars to get the changes made and I just don't have that right now. Has anyone else already done this and is willing to share some hints? I would use the phpBB bridge, but it looks like that will be discontinued soon. Frown

:helpme:

Thanks!

By the way - thanks for replying to my prompt email I sent you in response to your request a few days ago. Nothing like taking time to invest in reviewing and promptly replying to the 100's of emails I get to have some users just assume that's expected and not even take the time to reply back. Now you post back to the forum and make it sounds like I should just add every feature thats asked or as you want significantly change the code for free. Evil Most of the forum scripts would need to be reviewed and changed to do what you want - which is a very non-standard setup.

Good luck - my cost just doubled Rolling Eyes

I never said there was a problem with your costs, I just can't afford $200 for the changes. I thought that perhaps some other users have already done this and could give me some suggestions. I have some experience with scripts and could possibly do it with a little help. I know your time isn't free, that is why I didn't try to say you were too expensive. And I'm sorry you didn't receive my reply. I said thanks for the quote but it wasn't within my budget.

So you want to have your Geeklog in the subdirectory /forum , is it? Would that be a second installation of Geeklog or the same?

Hi 1000ideen,

No, I want to leave geeklog where it is, but I want to run the forum in another directory. For example geeklog is in sitename.com/news and I want the geeklog forum in sitename.com/forum

Thanks

If it is only for aesthetic reasons and you are on apache you could give it a try with .htaccess

As Blaine explained the forum plugin is a plugin to geeklog and expects certain standard elements to be in the correct place, and be geeklog the root of the directory.
Taking in out, but still be integrated within is indeed a lot of work that will cost you (whether it is in time or money) every time you do an upgrade.

I would suggest you first make a top ten list why you want it to derive from the standard, and reconsider.

If the answer is still Yes, I want it outside the root geeklog directory, then look at your reasons and see if it aesthetic and a rewrite through htaccess could help, or if it is more fundamental.

And remember, this is a drastic decesion that will come back time after time whenever you upgrade.

Best Regards,

Even .htaccess is not likely to work. The forum link in the top menu would still be "{$_CONF['site_url']}/forum/index.php"

Basically every place in the forums code and the core plugin api that access any of the $_CONF path and url variables needs to examined and possibly modified to do this change. And you have to make all these changes all over again when the next version of the forum software (or core software) is released. $200 was a low offer, IMO.

If the news section is a one man blog, why not installing geeklog twice?

Thanks everyone for the advice. I finally decided the best thing to do was to run a forum completely seperate. Unfortunately the users will have to register again, but at least it will end up where I want.
