Newbie Getting up to Speed to Administer Site?

As I posted in the installation forum this morning, I have zero background in anything related to GL, but would like to get a site up in the near future. I am trying to get GL installed on my Intel Mac as a means to nose around some (thus the install forum post), but I recognize that to get this thing going in the right way, I'm going to need some help.

I have contacted one of the folks who offers setup help on GL.net, and expect I'll use his services to get up and running, with some customization, perhaps a plugin or two, etc. What I'm trying to figure out is how hard (or doable) it will be to administer/maintain my site once it's up and running. I'm willing to spend some money up front, but I'd really like to be able to handle much/most of the ongoing work on my own, rather than continually relying on paid help. But I just don't know how feasible this is for a total newbie working with GL, what it's like to adminster/maintain, etc. Can anyone give me some feel for this? Will I need ongoing help, as issues arise, or will I be able to make my way down (or is it up? I can never remember) the learning curve quickly enough to handle most things once the site is up and running?

I know this is a question that really depends on the individual user, but perhaps some can shed light given the parameters I've described...total newbie to this type of software, but not a total tech moron, interested in learning, etc. Thanks.
