php sort ascending or descending syntax

This might not be the right ofurm for this , but its a general question about geeklog. Anyway ive got some items that are sorted by date which works but in some cases i want oldest to newest and others i want newest to oldest, is there a correct syntax for "order by date" That can make it sort oldest to newest or vice versa?
