I really like the Site Event feature in the left block, and wish to be able to dynamically show that on the main page of the parent site. I am unable to determine however, where that comes from.
What specific file produces that, and would I be able to capture it for inclusion either directly thru "php include" or RSS?

"Site events" is part of the Calendar plugin. You can actually create an RSS feed for them via the Content Syndication admin panel. Just create a new feed for the Calendar plugin.
