I think on a large site with lots of topic sections it would be great to seperate out the topics for seperate but small (text) blocks of their own, so book reviews, Interviews etc all get their own what's new block.
That would be a really good way to highlight new content on a very busy site and it would enable people to view easily fresh content.....
Also a popular Comments Block would be very interesting as it would enable the viewing of otherwise possibly obscure comment threadss which may be of interest if they are generating a lot of postings...

You can write your own what's new block that checks the topic and only displays new stories that are in topic. This doesn't work so well when you are in an article though, since there is no global topic variable.

So I could have a what's new block for each topic ?
