Now, I'm lost. I'm upgrading to 1.4.1 from 1.4.0. I read the directions but still unsure I'm doing it correctly. Is this how I do it?
Install 1.4.1.
Create New db
Overwrite db with old db
I did this and keep getting the "db already upgraded" error.
or do I need to create new db, drop all the tables, then import old db data and hit upgrade?

Backup the old database
Copy the 1.4.1 files to your old install, make sure to preserve various config options in Config.php.
Remember to modify public_html/lib-common.php to point to your config.php
Run admin/install/install.php and choose the upgrade option.
Done.

Again, it tells me that "Database already up to date!" It keeps doing this. If it's done, how do I complete the install?

At what step does it tell you this? Don't INSTALL 1.4.1. Just copy the files to the server where the 1.4.0 system resides.

That's probably the problem. 1.4.0 was messed up, so I had to delete it. I backed up the site & db beforehand. So what's the best way to do this?

Restore the backup.
Copy the 1.4.1 files to the server (Remember to also copy the files for any plugins that are in the backup.)
point the config.php and the new database
Run admin/install/install.php and choose upgrade existing database.

Then your backup is 1.4.1. Or it's a partial upgrade. How familiar are you with SQL?
Does your gl_pollanswers table have a "remarks" column?
Does your gl_blocks table have an "Autotags" column?
If the answer is yes to both those questions, then the backup is already 1.4.1.
If it isn't, I suggest looking through the /sql/updates/mysql_1.4.0_to_1.4.1.php file and figuring out how to apply the missing changes.

I see remarks and allow_autotags. So it's 1.4.1? Now what?

What happens when you just go to index.php? If the database is 1.4.1 and the files are 1.4.1 then it should work. Just make sure you've also installed any additional plugins that are in the database.
