I am considering writing a plugin to handle advertising blocks - so far I am contemplating:
  • right/left blocks
  • centerblock w/ top, after, & bottom displays for different adds
  • database driven storage of advertising code snippets
  • per ad configurability for block & topic
  • per ad configurability for start/end dates

Are there any other features people would like to see?

Anything is better than nothing. I'd love to see something like this.

Possibly a way to make it so you can have multiple clients and how to track each one and the ads they provide.

Some way to have reports generated on how many clicks and who clicked them by IP and host name.

If an ad was to be generated for revenue, what are the per click, per show, and number of set ad showings in a given time before they expire for that period.

I think these are all good ideas, and I'm sure there are more to expand this.

nikebound,

I commend your initiative! You have some great ideas and I think Ironmax hit on some great additional ideas to truly make it a valuable addition to the community. I'm excited to see what develops and hope we can be a part of it! Big Grin

At gl Labs, we aim to provide a home for plugin development and on behalf of Mark and I, we invite you to use any resources at our disposal. More info can be found here. Just shoot me an email if you have any questions or requests.

To continue to get the development juices flowing, I would recommend taking a look at Joomla and seeing how they handle ad management. Not so much to copy their solution, but to use it as a springboard for discussion as to what works, what doesn't, ways to improve, etc.

I look forward to rolling up my sleeves alongside you! Let me know if there is anything I can do to help! Big Grin

Thx!

Eric

Hello, What is the progress for this ad rotator? Are you planning to release it for free?
