I want to make some changes to the config.php file but need help with the following:

What do I need to get to it? Where is it?
Where do I get an editor for php?

I am not a techie so the more detailed the better. Thanks.

Any plain text editor will do. Use Notepad if you don't have anything else or search the forums for recommendations. Don't use anything like Dreamweaver or Word ...

The config.php will be on your webspace somewhere. Since you're asking, you probably used an auto installer like Fantastico. In which case you'll find it in the root directory of your webspace (where it shouldn't be, but that's another topic ...).
