Is there a limit to how big a static page can be?

I've built a directory as a static page that displays on the home page. It's quite large. I've noticed when it reaches a certain size, it freaks geeklog out. Suddenly all the tables are whacked out. It doesn't display properly.
If I delete a bit from the file, it suddenly displays correctly. Which makes me think there's some size limit. Is this so? Can it be changed so there's no limit?

The is a limit to the size of the static pages due to the database.
