I have read loads of good stuff about autolinks and autotags - but I still have no idea how to use them.
For example if in media gallery I have got an image; how do I insert that image into a story? I have read all the documentation I can find but nowhere does it say how to use these autotags and autolinks. Would it be worth using them because it appears that both can be switched off. If switched off would the image disappear from the story?

As far as turning it off, yes if you disabled Media Gallery, the images would disappear from the articles.

And if you turn off autolinks in your config.php, all autolinks are disabled.
