I'm new to Geeklog, and I was curious: has anyone successfully developed the Advertising plug-in for Geeklog yet?
I've noticed that there was one in the works further down in the forums (last post in Feb. '08 ), however, I can find no details/downloads of any that have completed development, or are in beta stages.

I may be in the minority, using Geeklog as a CMS (instead of a weblog), but I am in dire need of an advertising plug-in!!

Any information/assistance is greatly appreciated!!

You need to give us more information on what you want? Where is this advertising being displayed? Are you selling this advertising?

In most cases you could stick the Ad html or script code (like from Adsense or OpenX (which was phpadsnew)) into the geeklog template file where you want the ad to display.

I do apologize for the vague post. I need something like a banner manager; Banner or block advertisements sold appear on the site, depending upon the number of impressions purchased. Coming from the advertising industry myself, I realize that this is a massive undertaking.

I know that, depending upon the template (which I can modify), the banner/block ads could run wherever I want; I guess I'm looking for more of a scheduling/tracking/trafficking plug-in to serve the advertising on the site.

I've only recently heard of OpenX, and am not familiar with its functionality; but it looks promising, so I think I'm going to explore this avenue a little further.

I've been thinking about such a plugin before. I would like to hear what you regard as more or less important and also what do you mean by "tracking/trafficking"?

One obvious feature is to schedule ads. Number of times and posible target certain IP addresses, pages, languages etc.
Regarding tracking I guess you must be able to see the number of impressions. But is clicks also important. or will the customer track this them self anyway?

Just thought I'd say hello since you were talking about tools for managing the advertising on your websites.

About plugins and website integration
As it happens we're busily working away on plugins for some of the most popular CMS's used by OpenX publishers. But what I really wanted to say is that you don't need a plugin to use OpenX. You just need to add ad tags into your website template and then manage everything from the OpenX administration interface.

About ad management (aka trafficking) features
Some of the key features you are probably looking for which will help you increase your ad revenue and make advertisers happy are:
1. the ability to set ad campaign goals: deliver ads between these dates, deliver XXX ads total, achieve XXX click throughs total
2. the ability to target ads: show this ad to US visitors, show these ads between 4pm and 10pm local time...
3. control where ads are shown: show this on the homepage, show this on pages about topic...
4. set priorities: give this ad higher priority than another
5. see how campaigns are performing: lots of statistics

What I meant by tracking/trafficking is the ability to to track impressions, click-throughs, etc., and trafficking - controlling placement of the ads on specific pages, in specific areas of the page, etc. Obviously clicks are important, as a lot of non-technical clients (local advertisers who aren't as tech-savvy) inquire as to how many visitors did in fact click-through to their site. (Please excuse me, as I am unsure of your background with advertising - I'm going very general here). In the advertising industry, many agencies and companies take the little things for granted. What is important for a major client (many of whom have an agency design their advertising and use third-party tracking) will not be as important, or as accessible to the smaller "mom-and-pop" type clients. That being said, as much information as can be given is best (impressions and click-throughs, distrobution [if linked to multiple sites], average interaction time, unique impressions, click rates [percentages], and many others.) Yes, scheduling is just as important, if not the most important thing; however, a close second is the detail of reporting that you can give to the advertiser should they be unable to monitor or track the advertising themselves. (I know it is a lot - but this is from my experience within the industry).

Mr. George:
I have installed OpenX, and I am really enjoying it. It delivers on the features that I need it to do, and the flexibility to control everything I need to do.
As I have only started to solicit advertising for my site, I have found it to be one of the easiest packages I have ever used!
I am considering using it on more of my sites (I currently own/operate 5 sites - I'll be opening a 6th soon!)

I hope that this answers some of the questions. It is a programming nightmare for one person - otherwise I would attempt to take on the burden myself!

Can you explain how to integrate OpenX into the geeklog. This will be so helpful to everybody wants to use ads on websites. Will be very helpful if OpenX has plug-in for geeklog...

Just put the OpenX tags in the Geeklog templates where you want them (article.thml, featuredstory.thtml, header.thtml, footer.thtml) or in a (center)block. Quite easy.
